“Excessive craftsmanship is a vulgarity fully as distracting as shoddiness. A thing should be made exactly and only as well as it needs to be for its idea to be realized.”

Peter Schjeldahl

There’s a quiet humility in an object made only as well as it needs to be to fulfill its purpose, a sweet spot often occupied by vernacular utilitarian objects but equally true in the field of art.  In fact, the degree of craftsmanship in my work, and it varies throughout each piece, is fundamental to the meaning of the work.  Some elements are precise, fragile, made with great care, others are not so controlled in their making, introducing an element of chance and even violence.
