Ash and Dust #30, 2024
American white ash, marble dust, acrylic medium, glue
149 x 47 x 42cm
There is a sense that these objects are not constructed so much as revealed. From the trunks of huge ash trees, the victims of emerald ash borer, the elements are delivered whole by a fully subtractive process. The ash is not “raw” material, it’s not milled into lumber and then used to create something else. The finished form of each element remains as complete and intact as it was when within the volume of the trunk but is released, excavated, given something of an afterlife.
